Un-Reconstructed

Un-Reconstructed is a five-piece War for Southern Independence string band which also performs Irish and Scottish folk music. Band members consist of: Dave Edwards on guitar, harmonica, penny whistle and lead vocals; Susie Stephenson on hammered and lap dulcimers, jaw harp, bohdron, and harmony vocals; Chris Dempsey on fiddle, mandoline and harmony vocals; Doug Jennings on banjo, guitar and harmony vocals; and Harry Nuttal on bass fiddle and harmony vocals. The band has been together since about 1994 and got their start playing around the campfires of many War Between the States re-enactments. Un-Reconstructed

They have been as far north as Gettysburg and as far south as Biloxi. Dave and Susie have known each other since high school, and Chris is Susie's cousin, although she has only known him for less than a decade. There's a cruel joke about southern girls goin to a family reunion to find a date... well, Susie went to a family reunion and found a fiddle player. She asked him if he knew any Scottish songs. He said "Well I know one that sounds Scottish" and he promptly broke into Scotland the Brave. She knew he would be perfect!!! They have been playing together ever since. They travel around quite a bit and have played at a variety of places but they never have any fun. Dave has declared that if he ever starts having fun he's going to quit, so they try our best not to have any!!

"Our goal from the beginning has been to have a sound that is original and authentic. I think maybe we have managed "unique" if nothing else. Remember, we are a work in progress."

--Susie Stephenson

They do primarily play period music from the War Between the States but also a lot of Celtic folk songs. They try to combine the two into a sound that will be pleasing to the ear and maybe help someone to learn a little bit about that hard time in our history. They hope that through their music they can do their part to honor their ancestors and help keep the memories alive!!
