The Basement Tapes
Song Background
INTRO:
This was used to open some of the
early Saint shows.
The voice was done by Steve Hook .
IN THE NIGHT/WARRIORS OF THE SON:
The medley
at the beginning is easily recognized as Through the Sky, but because
the band wasn't performing that track, we did the medley at the beginning
of the show and then combined In The Night and WOS. This was a rehearsal
that took place in San Jose CA. in 1989 just before the HIS Festival and
would be Saint last rehearsal to date as a performing act. Included are
John Mahan, Dee Harrington, Josh Kramer, John Perrine and Richard Lynch.
It should also be noted that this was the only time Saint ever played
as a five piece band.
THE REAPER:
This song was written by Richard
Lynch and John Mahan during The Gentile days. We didn't include it in
The Gentiles demo, but recorded it for the Warriors of the Son EP. WOS
was meant to be a full length LP but cash flow restricted us from mastering
this song and Killers and the destroyers. So we opted to make a 6 song
EP.
KILLERS AND THE DESTROYERS:
This song was
also written by Richard Lynch and John Mahan during The Gentile days
and as aforementioned meant to be on the WOS EP, but its history is
a bit different as, John Mahan rewrote the lyrics and gave it a new drum
beat and it became the song, Destroyers of the world on the Time's
End CD.
ABYSS/THE GENTILES:
The 1981 demo of The
Gentiles was a tremendous move for Christian Metal. Though by today's
standards this is pretty mild, in 81, this was heavy stuff. John Mahan,
Russ Kock, Bob Page, Jim Maxwell, Richard Lynch and Max Clark took on
the task and put out this 4 song demo. Abyss was later recorded by Saint
and put on the WOS EP. Written by Richard Lynch and John Mahan
SELF MADE MAN/THE GENTILES:
The first song
ever written by Richard Lynch and John Mahan. It never made it to production
status, but has a strong message on greed.
SPACE CRUZER/THE GENTILES:
This song was
later recorded on Saint's CD Time's End.
WORRYING WORLD/THE GENTILES:
This song
if you listen carefully, you will hear the rhythm structure to Phantom
of the Galaxy/Time's End and The Accuzer/ Too Late for Living.
LIKE A VISION:
I know this is a horrible
recording but is worthy in that it's the only song done after the 1989
break up with new Saint singer Max Clark. It was recorded on a Fostex
X15 4 track recorder and we used a Casio Key board drum thing.
SHADOWS OF THE NIGHT:
This was recorded
in same era as Like a Vision as was the next song Let Us Pray. We later
added Josh's vocals so the song would be complete, the lyrics are as they
were
LET US PRAY:
We later added Josh's vocals
so the song would be complete, the lyrics are as they were.
STAR PILOT 2:
This is a rehearsal done at Joe Schomus's house. It's
the very same recording I used to re write Star Pilot's Return on the
"In The Battle" CD. As you will hear some things have changed but the
main structure is there.
TIME'S WASTING:
Again this is a rehearsal
done at Joe Schomus's house. This has all the classic band practice elements
including the wife factor.
STAND AND FIGHT:
We only performed this
song one time, 1986, in Huntington Beach CA. playing a show with Barren
Cross. This is however; a practice at Mike Lowery house in Salem OR. Just
before Dee Quite and went with Holy Danger and we signed our contract
with the infamous Pure Metal. It's probably the only recording we have
with Mike on drums, he is a great drummer!!!
THE VICAR OF FATE:
This is a different
version than what we released, I do believe it's the same drum tracks
but the rhythms are a bit different as is the way Josh sang.
The ending of the song is pretty funny, John Mahan is groveling as
Rich is acting the part of the evil priest.
